Why do people act extremely interested in your vehicle for sale. I had the person almost setting up a date and time to see my 928 for sale, but then nothing. I have messaged them back and get no response. I have gotten no bites on Craigslist, but I also placed it on LetGo (app) and you can see if they read the message and they have, but no response. They offered me $3400 which I would gladly take (listed for $4000 so I could get talked down to around there). But seriously I just don’t get it.

When I sold my GS500 I had a guy come out and look at the bike. We agreed on a price, but then he never showed up to the second meeting where I was going to transfer him the title. Craigslist folks are weird.

It’s a really weird phenomenon. I had the same thing happen with my Audi when I sold it. People would set up a time, even say they were on their way, and then just never show up and never respond to texts. Like, did they die on the way? Did they suddenly realize they didn’t actually want a 1991 Audi? Or do they just get their kicks by wasting other people’s time?

Virtual tire kickers, man. What I hate is when I’m the guy trying to set up a time to look at the car, having made it clear that I have cash in hand, and the seller drops off the face of the earth.

Selling that bike was an adventure. The guy who actually bought it shows up, refuses to take his copy of the bill of sale, takes a license plate from another motorcycle, screws it on, and then rides off wearing a helmet, tank top, shorts and sandals. He did sign my copy, which I kept in my car until I was able to get the insurance surrender processed.

Wow, that is... a different kind of sale. I just want this stupid pile gone. As much as I would love to make it my Wasteland car, I could use the money more.

It may help to list the car for sale on Porsche forums or local car enthusiast groups. More targeted than Craigslist, and way, way more likely to find buyers who are willing to actually trailer a car off.

You sure there wasn’t a followup email asking you to ship the car to Nigeria, that ended up in your spam folder?

Well seeing as I read the 3 interesting FP posts first thing in the AM then switch to Oppo for the whole day it works. Plus I just type “oppo” into the http bar and it takes me here. Some reason I just never added the Oppo bookmark.

Craigslist is a joke. Buying, selling, whatever - it’s completely anonymous so everyone is assholes on it. Put it on cars.com or autotrader, there’s people who are actually looking for cars there.

I had that happen the last time I tried to BUY on Craigslist. Had cash for full asking price with me, they didn’t show. Texted, they replied suggesting a different time (same place), no-showed again. Saw the car with a for sale sign in front of their work two days later (they worked across the street from my office, which is where they took the ad photos). They never answered another text or email. I debated texting them a photo of the cash but just gave up.

OK how about this. On cars dot com you get people who know what they are looking for. It is usually a smaller group. On craigslist you get a lot of people but none of who have no idea what they want and therefore are distracted by whatever shiny thing is at the top of the page. Eventually, most of them will buy (or sell) cars. The question is how much bullshit and browsing you’re willing to put up with from people who are literally there to browse. That’s the cache of craigslist. You can browse if you’re buying or gauge interest if you’re selling, etc.

I have bought and sold 15+ vehicles and tons of other stuff over the past decade or so on the internet, primarily on Craigslist, and I have to strongly disagree with you.

Yes, there are annoying people on there for sure, but if you know what you’re doing, you’ll always get what you need done. Also, in my albeit limited experience, these other methods of sale do not at all exempt you from having to deal with idiots and assholes. In fact, I’d say you will almost only find the savvy guys on Craigslist, and on AutoTrader you’re either dealing with older folks who don’t know of an alternative, dealers (spammers), or more likely, it will just sit for longer.

Agree to disagree. As a buyer I get stood up 30% of the time. As a seller, it’s closer to 70% or more. I expect to have a test drive one in 8 to 10 replies I get. That’s before getting to people who want me to title them the car without payment in full (“oh I need the car now but I get paid on Friday - can I give you 70% today?”) or who have backed out of letting me take delivery on the car when I showed up with cash and the bill of sale they already signed. I never change plans for anything I’m buying or selling on craigslist at this point. Maybe it’s regional, but this has been a consistent experience in New York City, Albany, and less frequently in Connecticut.

I agree with those numbers to some extent. It’s worse when selling a non-enthusiast car, so I guess I could chalk a lot of my good experiences up to all of the more specialized cars I’ve bought and sold. For instance, when I sold my e36, I only had one guy come look at at, and that was the guy who flew down from San Francisco to buy it. Then there was my buddies Ranger that I sold for him, and I got a ton of flakes.

I have probably had a worse experience overall on AutoTrader, and just stopped listing there altogether. Somehow got much more spam, shitty offers from dealers, and people who asked a ton of questions who really just didn’t know what the hell they were doing.

Again though, all anecdotal experience.

That’s strange, I had the opposite problem, but that might be attributable to me being in a slightly lower price tier than you. Bunch of kids who want something fast but don’t know how to act. When I sold my ATX Camry and Maxima it was fine. People showed up and confirmed it was as listed. Then they drove off. The enthusiast ones people were no-shows or were lowballing before even showing up or even worse showing up an hour late and then lowballing.

Get it smogged. I’m the kind of person who would have said I was no longer interested but a car with no smog is a complete no go for me. If you can’t be buggered to go smog the car, you can’t expect to attract the kind of buyer that can be buggered to say goodbye.

So 60 bucks and an hour of your time is make it or break it with the car? It doesn’t sound like you want to sell it. Or reduce the price further to get a faster/easier sale.

The smog thing is a tough one since you’re so close to the cut-off date. Someone already looking at a car that old is going to give first pick to smog exempt cars. Not to mention, it is your legal responsibility as the seller to get it anyway. You also mention registration but don’t comment on back fees.

Jesus man, get off your butt and hustle! Nothing in life is easy, and selling cars is no exception. GLWS

It isn’t that. Registration is at like $100 right now, Smog is way more than $60 here lol. I am just done trying with the car. I keep thinking about just scraping it.

Breaks my heart to hear that, but I’ve been there. I sold one of my old miatas for practically nothing because I felt like that. Still regret it. A day or two of effort would have made me a couple grand in price difference.

Or donate it to a cause you like. Then it can do some good and you can move on with your life. Plus a tax write off.

Yeah, we will see. I just wish I had a garage, then I’d be tinkering on it all the time and there would be no issue.
